ESOS - Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme

    What is it?

ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for the private sector, including some not-for-profit organisations, that meet the qualification criteria for a “Large Undertaking” and it is administered by the Environment Agency.

Initial audits were due for completion by 5th December, 2015 and then every 4 years thereafter so we are almost half way towards the next stage. Qualifying surveys can be conducted at any time during the curent compliance phase which is from    6th Dec. 2015 to 5th Dec. 2019

Your business may not have qualified for phase one but you might wish to check if you meet the Large Undertaking criteria and have to particpate in  phase two.

You can complete the form on the right to see if your organisation qualifies as a “Large Undertaking” but in brief the threshold is currently set as follows:

    What constitutes a “Large Undertaking?”

    Any UK company that either:

    • employs 250 or more people, or
    • has an annual turnover in excess of 50 million euro and an annual balance sheet total in excess of 43 million euro (£38.9m and £33.5m respectively at the qualifying date exchange rate).

An overseas company with a UK registered establishment which has 250 or more UK employees (paying income tax in the UK)

The next qualification date is for the financial year ending 31st December 2018.

Whilst the turnover and balance sheet criteria are set quite high, it is quite possible that businesses that are much “smaller” financially might meet the employee benchmark particularly as all part-time employees on the payroll are included.

    Haven’t we already done this?

If you qualify for ESOS and your organisation is fully covered by ISO 50001, you don’t need to carry out an ESOS assessment. You just need to notify the Environment Agency that you are compliant with ESOS.

The assessment takes into account energy directly covered by Display Energy Certificates (DECs), Green Deal Assessments (GDAs), or ISO 50001.

    What are the benefits?

ESOS stands for Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme. The Government has obligations to meet under the EU Energy Efficiency Directive and it is possible to do the minimum to be compliant.

There is also an opportunity for ESOS to be a catalyst to drive a programme of efficiency within organisations to reduce consumption and cost.
